Character Design

One of my favourite aspects of art is coming up with new concepts and designs for characters, challenging myself to make interesting and visually unqiue designs is always extremely entertaining, and I love to see how far I can push my creativity.
Some of this art is as old as 2020 (the marker pieces), and although I would say my technical skills have improved since then, I am still quite happy with the actual designs that I created.
My approach to character design is actually rooted in simplicity, I usually choose an idea I want to evoke – such as a shape, a colour, or a concept – and base the rest of the design around that. I also like there being a narrative, or a story behind the character I make, I feel that gives the piece more meaning and intrigue, and makes the character more compelling.
The green motorbike piece here is a reimaigning of a design I created 2 years ago. I liked the character design a lot, and so decided to expand on the narrative of that character and the world I imagined he would exist in.
I love adding small details and aspects to character designs that won’t be seen upon a surface level observation, but rather noted on close inspection. I feel it gives the character more of a story, and grounds them.
