This was a silk painting piece I did for my A level art personal investigation based on mythology. Here, I look at the figure of the Azure dragon from Chinese mythology and Astrology.
Within the piece, the dragon is facing East as he is the protector of the East, and the multiple stars around and in his hand are there as the Azure dragon is rooted in and is very connected to astrology.
I also depicted a landscape beneath it as the Azure dragon was believed to be a protective entity, that roamed above the land.
For the main silk painting, I wanted the colour palette to be quite saturated and bold – partially because this is the kind of colouring I am often drawn to, but also to slightly subvert traditional Chinese Ink Wash paintings, which often stuck to a monochromatic palette. I wanted this to be my spin on a traditional mythological figure.
The blue and green version you can see after, however, is a closer homage to Chinese Ink Wash paintings, as it is mostly monochromatic. But even then, my choice of greens and blues subverts the typical warm, desaturated hues Ink Wash paintings often adhered to.
I did a few experiments as well, especially considering silk painting was a medium I had never tried before. Although it proved quite challenging, the experience was extremely fun, and i believe that it allowed me to pay proper homage to Chinese mythology.
Although I am applying for a more digital course, I wanted to include this piece as I believe it showcases my flexbility in art, and how willing I am to try new mediums and experiment. Even if this doesn’t always mean for the most easy experience.
